Letter From the Director

August, 2020

Welcome to the Village School Community for the school year. While the landscape for our return this fall has changed dramatically with COVID-19, it still remains an exciting time for all of us, those families returning to the Village School as well as the new families enrolled.

We are confident we have a strong reopening plan for the Village School. We have taken extra measures to invest in ways to keep children safe during this COVID pandemic, including EEC training for staff on health and safety procedures, investing in new state-of-the-art air purifiers for the classrooms, and creating outdoor classrooms for the children to learn and play safely.

Over the summer we have worked hard to develop a reopening plan for the Village School. We are excited to open our doors to your children on September 14th.

We have drafted extensive FAQ’s that outline many of our COVID-19 specific policies and procedures for the upcoming school year, which are subject to change as we continue to receive guidance from the Department of Early Education and Care and the MA Department of Public Health.

As in any year, the Village School Staff and Board wish to make the transition to a new school year as smooth as possible and hope you will join us in that effort. We have found that communication is of the utmost importance and it is our primary goal throughout the school. Please feel comfortable asking questions, the office door is always open, and I welcome each and every parent to stop by with a question or to just check in. The entire staff is extremely well versed in training issues and all that goes with children and families beginning a pre-school experience.

The Board of Trustees, who oversees the school, consists of current parents who regularly are in the school and are also a great resource and work tirelessly to build a wonderful sense of community for our school. We will make certain they are available to all of you. A list of the current Board of Trustees is available within the Parent Portal.

We would like to reiterate the thoughtful planning and process that occurs “behind the scenes” with the staff at The Village School to determine the very best classroom placement for your child. Let us begin by stating the obvious – all of our teachers are excited to be here and will provide a nurturing and loving school environment. Our teachers are passionate about early childhood education and want to share their excitement with each and every young person that enters our doors.

The following are some of the criteria that go into our planning process:

Age – There is a range of ages in each classroom. Clearly some children will be the oldest in the class which can potentially allow them to guide others in a leadership manner and others will be the youngest and can benefit from peer mentoring.

Gender – We try and balance classes so there is a sufficient boy/girl ratio.

Peer relationships – We try to make choices so that your child will have some pre-existing friends when they enter a new classroom but like to provide the opportunity for new friends to be made. One of the most important goals of The Village School is to provide your child with the social skills that they need to succeed throughout their future years of school and to succeed in life.

Developmentally Appropriate Learning Environments – The overriding philosophy of The Village School is a curriculum which adheres to Developmentally Appropriate Practice. This means we strive to engage your children as life-long learners in a thoughtful manner through playful environments that are appropriate for each child’s stage of development. In other words, our teachers make every effort to provide differentiated curriculum depending on the maturity of each child. Your child will be learning and playing and growing in an age-appropriate environment throughout all their years at The Village School.

Thank you so much in advance for your part in maintaining a safe learning environment.  As a small tightly knit community, we will all be counting on each other to work to keep our families and staff healthy this school year.  As always, please reach out if you have particular questions or concerns.  The teachers and I are very much looking forward to seeing your children back at The Village School this September.

“My children immediately felt comfortable at the Village School. The teachers were warm and caring and really made my children feel welcome. I loved the open-ended activities that were available each day.”
